Abu Sayyaf ‘berdugo’ arrested

Zamboanga City – A notorious member of the Abu Sayyaf Group (ASG), believed to be the hatchetman in several kidnapping operations in the Zamboanga Peninsula, was arrested at Barangay Poblacion, Imelda, in Zamboanga Sibugay province about 10:20 am last Saturday..

Sibugay province police Provincial Director Sr. Supt. Roy V. Bahian identified the arrested ASG as Bon Sarabpil alias Von and Kalbo.

He was arrested on the strength of a warrant of arrest issued by Judge Jesus C. Carbon, Jr. Presiding Judge of Regional Trial Court Branch 16, 9th Judicial Region in Zamboanga City for kidnapping and serious illegal detention with ransom.

According to Bahian, Sarabpil was the hatchetman or “berdugo” of Tuburan, Basilan-based ASG leader Montong Pula and the late kidnap-for-ransom group (KFRG) leaders Ben Mungkay, alias Boy Negro, and Usmal Lidjal, alias Cobra.

According to the police, Sarabpil carried out the grisly task of chopping off the heads of hostages whose relatives fail to meet their group’s ransom demands.

The report added that Sarabpil was most active between 2009 to 2011 in Basilan and in the Zamboanga Peninsula.

Sarabpil also allegedly served as “berdugo” with the KFRG of  Imam Yasin (Alicia based), Waning Abdusalam & Umbol Kahal (Naga based) and Itting Abbas in Sibugay Province.

Police authorities brought Sarabpil to this city yesterday for debriefing and subsequent turn-over to the proper court for commitment.
