Armed Forces of the Philippines will continue operations on Kalayaan (Spratly) Group of Islands amid President Aquino’s order to maintain status quo. AFP spokesman said there is no effect on military operations.
“Practically, there is no effect. As of now, we can continue our resupply operations, the logistics run, including the transport of troops for rotation,” Cabunoc stated.Deputy presidential spokesperson Abigail Valte said over the weekend, the government chose “to ease tensions and avoid any incident that may be construed as ramping up tensions or trying to provoke any of the claimant countries.”
“We need to ensure that we maintain our moral high ground because we filed a case before the arbitral tribunal as regards the West Philippine Sea,” Valte noted.
The Aquino government assures that deferring of improving military facilities at Pagasa Island in Kalayaan Group will not weaken Philippines’ position on West Philippine Sea.
“We have funds for the improvement but this is now being held in abeyance because of the case we have filed,” National Defense Secretary Gazmin said last Friday in a Senate budget hearing.
