The flicker of a candle light, when alone, can only enliven a small portion of darkness. Yet, when many candles are set ablaze, they can mimic daylight.
In order to commemorate and strengthen the ideals of peace both within and among all nations and peoples, the Armed Forces of the Philippines partnered with several public and private agencies to light candles of peace that would illuminate these dark moments in Philippine history.
It was seen fitting by organizers to spearhead a Candle-Lighting Event on September 28, 2013 in order to refocus the consciousness of the Filipinos on the true meaning of peace and how the attainment of it should be a shared responsibility of everyone.
It will transpire at 4:30 in the afternoon of Saturday, Sept. 8, at the AFP General Headquarters in Quezon City and along the Longest Peace Mural of the World and the EDSA People Power Monument.
September being declared as the National Peace Consciousness Month by GPH Proclamation No. 675 and Sept. 21 as International Day of Peace as proclaimed by United Nations General Assembly, this “Peace Activity” is a joint venture of AFP and other concerned government agencies and instrumentalities—including LGUs, GOCCs, as well as members of the private sector and civil society groups.
Key participants and stakeholders of the event are AFP active members and reservists and ROTC cadets, OPAPP, PNP, other government agencies, students from Camp Aguinaldo Elementary School and Camp Aguinaldo High School and civilian partners.
The event will begin with gathering of contingents in strategic places around the venue and a National Anthem to be rendered by the GHQ Chorale. An Ecumenical Prayer for Peace will be celebrated by the interfaith chaplains, religious leaders.
An Inspirational Message will be given by OPAPP Sec. Teresita Q. Deles which will be followed by the singing of peace song by GHQ Chorale prior to the candle-lighting proper.
The activity will be simultaneously celebrated in AFP units all over the Philippines as a form of united stand in protest against the humanitarian crisis happening now in Zamboanga City which has claimed lives and homes of our fellow Filipinos.
