CAMP AGUINALDO, Quezon City- As part of its commitment to help the Department of Education (DEPED) the 7th Civil Relations Group (Kawal Pinoy) participated in the opening day of the Brigada Eskwela 2013 by adopting Culiat Elementary School in this city on Monday (May 20).
The opening ceremony and parade started at around 7:00 am. It was attended by at least a hundred participants including teachers, parents, community leaders, soldiers and civilian volunteers.
Ms Marjorie Saliva, the Master Teacher, said that she was very excited that the soldiers came to help her school.
"It is the first time in our school's history that a military unit is spearheading the repair and maintenance activities during the Brigada Eskwela. We are very grateful for the kind assistance," said Saliva.
Included in the scope of work during the day-long activity was the repair of 300 arm chairs, repainting of the walls and cleaning of the classrooms.
The highly-skilled soldiers of the unit was backed by 50 volunteers from various partner organizations including Bantay-bayan Foundation, Talima Foundation, United Youth for Peace and Development and the Young Moro Professionals Network
Culiat Elementary School has at least 4,000 pupils who came from nearby villages. At least 70% of the pupils are Muslim children.
The said activity was supported by Smart Communications and Ericsson Philippines which provided cleaning materials and food provisions as well as wooden pallets.
