Burn by NPA
NEW People’s Army rebels yesterday burned heavy equipment in General MacArthur town in Eastern Samar.
The town was among areas hit by typhoon “Ruby” over the weekend but fortunately MacArthur had “minimal damage,” said Lt. Cmdr. Jim Alagao, spokesman of the military’s Central Command based in Cebu City.
Alagao said about 30 members of the NPA’s Eastern Visayas Regional Party Committee swooped down on Barangay Vigan at around 10 a.m. and burned two dump trucks and a backhoe owned by the “Hanjin company.”
He said Hanjin is engaged in a project involving widening of a national road.
A Reuters report said Hanjin Heavy Industries and Construction Co. Ltd, a South Korean company, is working on a US-funded road in Eastern Samar.
“They took advantage of the situation,” said Col. Restituto Padilla, AFP spokesman. “We are focused on humanitarian mission in the north and we have minimal presence there.”
Alagao rapped the NPA for the attack.
Before Ruby made its first landfall Saturday night in Dolores town, the NPA said its units will be lending assistance to people residing along the path of the typhoon.
