Soldier killed in Bukidnon encounter

Cagayan De Oro City – A soldier was killed while two militiamen were injured in an encounter between army troopers from the 8th Infantry Battalion and members of the New People’s Army in Malitbog-Impasug-ong boundary Sunday.

Malitbog Vice Mayor Garry Casino said the encounter occured in Barangay San Luis just before festivities for the “Araw ng San Luis” was held Sunday.

Casino said residents evacuated due to the encounter for fear that the firefight would escalate further.

Meanwhile, farmers from Medina town complained to media Tuesday morning that they were blocked entry to Cagayan de Oro City by members of the 58th IB.

Farmers from Maanas, Medina were reportedly on their way to this city to attend a rally that was to be attended by 3,000 farmers belonging to the Kilusang Magbubukid ng Pilipinas (KMP).

Six 10-wheeler trucks loaded with farmers were reportedly blocked in a checkpoint in Medina town.

The military explained that the checkpoint was merely part of security procedures to make sure no weapons are being brought into the city.
