CAMP PERALTA, Jamindan, Capiz – The Army’s 3rd Infantry (Spearhead) Division has condemned the reported extortion activity of the New People’s Army (NPA).
At 8:00pm Monday September 29, the NPA destroyed the construction equipment of HLJ Construction Company owned by Henry Jordan at Sitio Buta, Brgy Caliling, Cauayan, Negros Occidental.
Lt Col Ariel Reyes, Commanding Officer of 47th Infantry Battalion said that more or less thirty (30) armed NPA rebels torched down the company’s heavy equipment that include one (1) backhoe and one (1) dump truck with the use of combustible materials.
Said equipment is being used for construction and rehabilitation of road segment which is a government developmental project in Brgy Caliling.
It was gathered by 47IB that the NPA sent extortion letters but were denied by the construction company.
Colonel Allan Martin, Commander of Army’s 302nd Brigade said “We intensified our security operations in the area targeting those who are behind this atrocity.”
Martin also asked the cooperation of the business sector to report any extortion attempt to prevent the same incident from happening in the future.
The CPP-NPA has been desperate in depriving the people’s aspiration for socio-economic development through this atrocity.
Despite the incident, Major General Rey Leonardo Guerrero, Commander of 3ID said “The Army here in Western Visayas will continue to protect the citizenry and ensure that development efforts of the government will reach the people especially in the far flung barangays.”
