3 NPAs killed

Davao City – Three members of the communists New People’s Army (NPA) rebels were killed and assorted firearms and ammunitions were recovered after an encounter between the rebels and government forces at around 5:45 p.m. on Sunday, Sept. 14 in Sitio Poiton, Barangay Gupitan in Kapalong town, Davao del Norte, the army reported.

Eastern Mindanao Command (EastMinCom) chief information officer Captain Alberto Caber said two soldiers belonging to 72nd Infantry Battalion were also wounded during the encounter.

Recovered from the rebels were one AK-47 rifle; one M-16 rifle; one improvised explosive device (IED); a hand grenade; medical kits; 2 backpacks; and several subversive documents.

Caber added that the soldiers along with CAFGU members were on security patrol to protect the community in Gupitan from harassments and extortion activities of the rebels when the encounter happened.

Pursuit operations are still ongoing as civilians in the area had reported of seeing more NPAs that were killed and wounded during the encounter.

Colonel Harold Cabreros, commander of the 1003rd Infantry Brigade said he had already directed his troops to sustain their security operations for the protection of communities in Kapalong town especially the indigenous cultural communities.

Coordination was also facilitated by the army with the local government of Kapalong for the proper disposition of the dead bodies of the NPAs, Cabreros added.
