‘Tree of peace’ propagated in Maguindanao watersheds

Cotabato City – While government and Moro Islamic Liberation Front (MILF) negotiating panels were ironing out kinks in a draft of the Bangsamoro Basic Law (BBL) in Davao City, converging civilian, military, and police contingents trekked to the watersheds in MThe convergent activity, in a bid to keep the Mindanao peace process momentum alive, was organized by Brig. Gen. Edmundo Pangilinan, head of the Army’s 6th Infantry Division, and participated in by dozens of his troopers, representatives of the Moro National Liberation Front (MNLF), the local media, police, and business communities.

“In our own little way, we should do something that is good for our community, environment, and especially in keeping with the propagation of understanding in the current peace process,” Pangilinan told reporters several minutes before the “tree of peace” planters proceeded to the watershed areas of Dimapatoy in Datu Odin Sinsuat town, Maguindanao, Saturday morning.
Former Cotabato City Mayor Muslimin Sema, an MNLF faction chairperson, and Pangilinan planted the first two seedlings of mahogany and narra, both known robust tree varieties, to symbolize their organizations’ “firm support” to the peace initiatives in Mindanao.
Representatives of the Minrico, a wood processing firm in Sultan Kudarat town, Maguindanao, planted 300 other tree varieties on the same watershed area, in addition to the 3,000 mahogany and narra seedlings the convergent group planted.
The Dimapatoy watershed is the main source of the Cotabato City Water District, which serves the towns of Datu Odin Sinsuat and Sultan Kudarat, and all the 37 barangays (villages) in this city.
It is located about three kilometers from Camp Siongco, the headquarters of the 6th Infantry Division.
