CAMP AGUINALDO, Quezon City--- The Army Dragon Boat Team has dedicated their upcoming
races to the members of the besieged Philippine peacekeepers who are trapped in
the Golan Heights.
Lt Col Harold M Cabunoc,
the President of the award-winning team, said that the soldier-athletes were
also saddened by the ongoing violence in Syria where their fellow soldiers are
currently deployed.
"We have learned
about the latest attack by the Al-Nusra rebels on our defensive positions. Our
soldiers have batchmates and friends who are among those who battled the rebels
yesterday (Aug 30)," said Cabunoc.
"We will dedicate
our games to our soldiers and their families. Our thoughts are with them too!"
The 18-man Philippine
Army Dragon Boat Team is leaving for Italy today.
The team is among the
100 club teams who are vying for the golds during the 9th IDBF Club Crews World
Championships that will be staged in Ravenna, Italy from 3-7 September 2014.
Cabunoc said that like
the Philippine peacekeepers, the Army Dragon Boat Team also survived some great
obstacles to compete in the prestigious world championship arena.
"Throughout our
written history, Filipino soldiers had been know known to be great fighters
with indomitable spirit. Like our brothers who are serving in the UN, we will
survive all these trials that we are facing," said Cabunoc, whose team
hurdled the great logistical requirements needed for the competition.
